Community Involvement

Phyllis Murdock, Vice President of Private and Entrepreneurial Banking, serves on the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Medically Fragile Children here in Georgia. She co-chaired the Fragile Hearts Ball held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Feb. 12, 2005. With the theme of “An Italian Love Affair”, the Ball will include dinner, dancing, and Silent Auction, and will honor the Child Advocate of the Year, Dr. Edward Goldstein, pediatric neurologist at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. Proceeds of the Ball and Silent Auction provide the largest base for funding the Foundation for Medically Fragile Children during the year.

The primary mission of the Foundation is to advocate and provide funds for the unmet healthcare needs of medically fragile children. Through advocacy and funding, these children can reach their maximum rehabilitation potential and they and their families can lead happier, healthier lives. In essence, the Foundation stands in the gap to provide necessary healthcare needs not provided by private insurance or Medicaid.

What is a medically fragile child? Medically fragile children are medically stable yet require skilled nursing services, therapies (physical, occupational, speech) and/or equipment to enhance or sustain their lives. They range in age from birth to 18 years of age and suffer from cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, cancer, heart and lung disease, spina bifida, and any number of other conditions that threaten their ability to survive without proper medical care.
